Frequently Asked Questions
1. When you say you help children with "special learning needs" who does that include?
That really depends on the particular Christian school or congregation and their willingness to individualize instruction. Lutheran Special Education Ministries works with schools and congregations to serve children who need alternative methods in order to understand material presented to them. We have years of experience working with children who struggle due to a wide variety of disabilities. Many times we make accommodations for children by working with the classroom teacher. Throughout the years we have worked with children that have been given labels such as: Attention Deficit Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Developmentally Delayed, Hearing-Impaired and Gifted.
2. I am a volunteer Sunday school teacher. One of the children in my class is a special education student. How can Lutheran Special Education Ministries help me bring the Good News of Jesus to this student?
One of the services provided by our Resource Center is assistance to Sunday school and vacation Bible school teachers who find themselves working with children who have special learning needs. Because each special education student has unique needs, each request is handled individually. Our resource specialists can help with teaching ideas and lesson materials geared specifically for the student in need.
3. How do schools receive assistance from Lutheran Special Education Ministries?
A Lutheran or other Christian school that wishes to provide special education classes for its students joins in partnership with Lutheran Special Education Ministries to establish a special education program at the school. The school then pays a fee to Lutheran Special Education Ministries for this service. For this fee, Lutheran Special Education Ministries provides a caring, Christian special education teacher and the materials needed to work with special education students.
4. Do Lutheran Special Education Ministries programs help children with only certain learning problems?
No. Just as God creates each person with unique qualities, each child we serve has unique learning needs. Our dedicated, Christian, special education teachers work with each child individually to meet his or her specific needs. Whether the child is dyslexic, has an attention deficit difficulty, or needs special assistance with reading or math, the end result is to provide the tools he or she needs to learn in a caring, Christian environment
5. Does a major church body fund Lutheran Special Education Ministries?
We rely on fees, donations from individuals and organizations, and bequests.
